Boies Schiller Flexner

Overview

Boies Schiller Flexner is a firm of internationally recognized trial lawyers, crisis managers, and strategic advisors known for our creative, aggressive, and efficient pursuit of success for our clients. Over two decades, we have established a record of taking on and winning complex, groundbreaking, and cross-border matters in diverse circumstances and industries for many of the world’s most sophisticated companies. Our litigators are recognized for prevailing when the odds are longest and the stakes highest. We regularly take cases to trial, and we prepare each one accordingly from the start. We have the experience, judgment, and vision to develop the arguments that achieve favorable outcomes, whether those arguments are needed inside or outside of the courtroom. We build deep relationships with our core clients that allow us to represent them in any matter, in any forum, anywhere in the world. And we regularly represent our clients as plaintiffs as well as defendants, often sharing the risk of litigation through creative fee structures. We are proud of our reputation as a “national litigation powerhouse” (The Wall Street Journal) and as “one of America’s most successful and sought-after law firms for cases that matter” (The American Lawyer). We strive every day, in every matter, to build upon that reputation, to achieve exceptional results for our clients, and to remain the firm that our clients will always want to entrust with their most significant matters.

Select Experience

Boies Schiller Flexner is the choice for the world’s premier sports organizations seeking counsel in litigation and commercial matters. Our partners have served as lead counsel, co-lead counsel, and trial counsel in major cases pertaining to antitrust law, media rights, and other critical areas, including in the landmark case of O’Bannon v. NCAA. We represent clients at the pinnacle of professional sports, including the NBA, NASCAR, the YES Network, the America’s Cup, International Speedway Corporation, the New York Yankees, and the New York Jets.

Our firm launched in 1997 with Sports Law, when co-founder David Boies represented George Steinbrenner and the New York Yankees, along with Adidas, in a widely publicized antitrust suit against Major League Baseball. The case challenged longstanding agreements between baseball clubs regarding shared licensing revenue; it was ultimately settled out of court to Steinbrenner’s advantage, setting a precedent for lucrative merchandising agreements across professional sports. Since then, the firm has remained at the forefront of innovative sports law that challenges the status quo. We made headlines when we represented the NFL in the resolution of a labor dispute with its Players Association, and when we worked with members of the pro basketball players union in an antitrust suit against the NBA and its owners. Whether in litigation or arbitration, our Sports Law practice strategically outflanks the opposition to create successful outcomes for clients. This extends to our work in media rights, including our representation of the Yankees’ Entertainment Sports Network in litigation against cable providers regarding tier placement of Yankees’ games.
